Rosies Shawl

This site is dedicated to the making of a shawl.  To have a hands on reference to creating a basic prayer shawl or traditional dance shawl.  As I did my own learning from my adopted Lakota family... I have no other reference.  While searching for information on the making of a shawl.. to send to a dear friend.. I discovered no such information available to me .  So.. here I am.. Telling the story and sharing the photos of the latest Shawl that I am honored to be creating for a dear friend.. who is about to journey to her first Sundance.  Crazy Angel Horse Woman.. this is for you !! Pilamaya yelo!!!  Join me on my journey and discoveries as I create another shawl .  May you find purpose and comfort as you join me.. and I pray to inspire you to create your own shawl.. or as the Lakota do so well.. to gift a shawl !!!

Pilamaya yilo Unci!!!

As I begin the making of a shawl.. I first go to Creator and pray for the wisdom and love needed to create this shawl.  After selecting a piece of Gaberdine Material ( traditional  and I love the way it hangs)  I begin by praying as I square the material to a 60 inch piece of material (60 inches by 60 inches).  I like this size shawl... as I am tall... if shorter you may want to measure by standing with your arms out stretched.. and have some one measure from wrist to wrist.... Then use that measurement plus one inch to square your fabric.
From the scrap of left over material... I always.. cut a few 3 inch by 3 inch... or larger squares.. and make prayer ties.. with Tobacco... before I go on with the making of the shawl.  I then gift one of the bundles to the receiver of the shawl... and I also keep one.. in my own medicine bundle.
